Maratopia is not an anonymous animal park, but a personally managed nature garden. It creates habitats where butterflies and other animals can be observed under natural conditions.
Habitat rather than scenery
A garden where butterflies can live
Host plants provide caterpillars with the food they need to develop. Nectar plants and blossoms offer important food sources for adult butterflies. Moist, sunny, and sheltered areas create places of refuge in the tropical garden.
The diversity of plants and Limón’s climate shape this habitat. Naturee observations do not follow a fixed show schedule, but the rhythm of weather, light, temperature, and time of day.
Costa Rica’s forest dweller
The Blue Morpho – Costa Rica’s luminous forest dweller
The intense blue effect on the upper side of the wings is created by the fine structure of the wing scales and the way light hits them. In flight, the appearance alternates between brilliant blue and a much darker effect.
The underside of the wings is brown and marked with eye-like patterns. This design supports camouflage when the butterfly rests with its wings closed.
How active a Morpho is depends on natural conditions. That is exactly why no two visits are alike and a sighting cannot be guaranteed.
