The quick answer

What does Pura Vida mean?

Literally, Pura Vida means “pure life,” although “simple life” can sometimes come closer to the feeling behind it. In Costa Rican everyday speech, however, it can mean much more.

Depending on the situation and tone, Pura Vida can be a greeting, a goodbye, a thank-you, an expression of approval, a calm response to a small problem, or simply a way of saying that everything is good.

Language and meaning

What does Pura Vida literally mean?

Pura means “pure,” while vida means “life.” The literal translation is therefore “pure life.” Yet that translation can sound stiff in English because the phrase is not normally used as a complete explanation of life itself.

In Costa Rica, Pura Vida works more like a flexible attitude expressed through two words: gratitude, ease, friendliness, acceptance, and a practical sense that life can still be appreciated even when it is not perfect.

Everyday use

How Costa Ricans use Pura Vida

There is no single fixed translation. Context, tone, and the relationship between speakers determine what Pura Vida communicates.

“Pura Vida!”

As a goodbye

A friendly, relaxed way to end a conversation.

It can acknowledge kindness without sounding formal.

“Thank you for your help.”

To say everything is good

A positive reply when someone asks how things are going.

“How is everything?”
“Pura Vida.”

To show appreciation

Sometimes it expresses simple enjoyment or approval.

“Pura Vida.”

To stay calm

It can signal that a small problem is manageable.

“Sorry, we are a few minutes late.”
“Pura Vida.”

Authenticity matters

Is Pura Vida just a tourist slogan?

It is genuinely used

Costa Ricans use Pura Vida in everyday conversations. It is not something invented only for visitors, even though tourism and international advertising have made it famous worldwide.

It is not a magic formula

Not every person uses the phrase equally often, and it does not mean that every situation is carefree. Treating it as a cheerful universal answer can flatten the real culture behind it.

Historical background

Where does the expression come from?

The exact path by which Pura Vida became a national everyday expression is not fully documented. The phrase became increasingly popular in Costa Rica during the 20th century.

A frequently mentioned connection is the Mexican film ¡Pura vida! from the 1950s. That reference may have helped popularize the words, but Costa Rica’s later use of the phrase developed through daily speech over time rather than through one single proven moment.
